Fix ‘Yahoo SMTP Server Not Working Error’ With These 7 Possible Workarounds

To use Yahoo Mail account in offline mode and to back up emails and conversation in your computer system, you being a Yahoo user can configure and set up your account on a third-party email client application namely Outlook, thunderbird, Mac Mail and more.

For that, all you will need is IMAP or POP and SMTP server settings of Yahoo Mail. To be precise, you can integrate Yahoo service with a third-party email client by simply entering the correct ‘Incoming (IMAP or POP) and Outgoing (SMTP) settings of Yahoo.’

Undoubtedly, this is ‘the best part’ of having an account on Yahoo Mail –that you can connect your Yahoo account on different email platforms via using either POP or IMAP and SMTP protocols.

Albeit, after configuration, you should not face any problem with your Yahoo Mail account on an email client; however, sometimes, Yahoo users have been seen complaining about not being able to send any email from their respective accounts.

So, if this is the case with you also then, you may have faced the ‘Yahoo SMTP Server is not working’ issue.

In regard to this, it is worth mentioning that SMTP, short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is a communication protocol responsible for the transmission of outgoing emails.

[Note: The Yahoo SMTP server settings work with most desktop mail clients and the same settings also apply to a web-based email program or a mobile device mail app.]

So, an error with the Yahoo SMTP server means you may face issues sending email messages from your Yahoo account until and unless the same starts working properly.

Thus, bearing in mind that you’re facing SMTP server malfunctioning for your Yahoo Mail account, we’re here today to help you fix the ‘Yahoo SMTP Server not working’ issue with the below-mentioned measures.

However, before jumping directly onto the troubleshooting part, let us tell you that there’s nothing to be worried about! This error of “unable to send emails” is not different for any email service users and can be resolved in no time.

With that said, let’s just get started—

[Note: You can work your way down the list until you fix the issue with one of our given solutions.]

Solution 1: Check for Yahoo Mail Server Down

If the Yahoo servers are not working fine or down for repair/maintenance then, this can definitely cause trouble in sending as well as receiving emails. So, first and foremost, you’ve to make sure that the Yahoo Mail server status is down or not in your area/region.

For that, you can check the status of the Yahoo Mail server by visiting websites like Downdetector.in and Downforeveryoneorjustme. These servers-checking websites will notify you whether there is any server down issue with Yahoo Mail or not and if other users have also reported the same issues with Yahoo, or it is just you who’re facing trouble with Yahoo SMTP server.

Solution 2: Verify the IMAP or POP and SMTP Server Setting of Yahoo Mail

No-brainer, you require entering IMAP or POP and SMTP settings for configuring your Yahoo email account on third-party email clients, right! So, if you’re facing ‘Yahoo IMAP or POP Server’ or ‘Yahoo SMTP Server’ error after configuration then, it simply requires on your end to verify whether you have set up your account with correct settings or not.

This is because for the smooth functioning of your Yahoo account in an email client, it needs to be configured with its accurate port settings.

So, here are the correct settings for Yahoo Mail that you must match respectively with your settings and if required, you can correct Yahoo settings for any of these servers to make sure you’re using the correct server settings—

Solution 3: Re-Configure the Account and Yahoo Mail Settings

As already said above, if you’ve configured your Yahoo account on desktop email client like Outlook or on iPhone/Android mobile email client with incorrect IMAP or POP and SMTP server settings then, you’ve to correct them to not face any ‘Yahoo Incoming and Outgoing Server’ error while sending or receiving of emails.

However, sometimes, even if you’ve entered the correct server settings and despite the information appearing to be accurate; you may face this error because the hard drive data saved by the app is either corrupted or contains some invalid characters.

Well, no matter what the reason is, you can try deleting your account from the app and re-add it to resolve the encountered Yahoo Mail not working error, entirely.

And, to do so, these are the steps, you have to follow—

  • Step 1: Firstly, delete your configured Yahoo Mail account and then, go to the ‘Add Account’ option on your Outlook email client. [Note: The same goes for using Thunderbird or any other third-party email account also.]
  • Step 2: As you click on the add-account option, you’ve to enter your complete email address and domain name in the username text-field.
  • Step 3: Once you do so, you need to simply click on the ‘Next’ button.
  • Step 4: Now, select the ‘Advanced’ or ‘Add Account’ option followed by providing the following information from the next step.
  • Step 5: In continuation, select the ‘Manual setup or additional server types’ and hit the ‘Next’ button on the add-account wizard box that pops up on the screen.
  • Step 6: On the next available wizard box, you’ve to select the ‘POP or IMAP’ radio button and click on the ‘Next’ button.
  • Step 7: Now, you can simply enter your Yahoo server settings (For this, refer to the above solution 2) to finally reconfigure your Yahoo account and settings.

Solution 4: Restart Your Device

Another possible workaround that you should consider is to ‘restart your device.’ This process of restarting your respective computer or mobile device (on which you’re using Yahoo Mail) will flush out all sorts of unused and junk files from the operating system.

Not only that, it will also optimize the performance of your device to help you fix the problem you’re facing with sending Yahoo emails i.e., in other words called the ‘Yahoo SMTP server error.’

Solution 5: Run Yahoo in Safe Mode

Next, if you’re using your Yahoo email on the Windows mail app, you can run Windows in safe mode and then access the Mail app to run your Yahoo Mail account without any add-ons. As doing so, help you check for improvements whether in safe mode or the Yahoo SMTP settings error is hindering your email exchange flow or not.

So, without wasting any further second, you can run the Safe Mode on Windows via following these steps—

  • Step 1: Press and hold the ‘Windows +R’ keys together.
  • Step 2: In doing so, a Windows Run Dialog box will appear in front of you. Inside it, type “msconfig” and hit the ‘OK’ button.
  • Step 3: Following that, click on the ‘Boot’ tab to open it separately.
  • Step 4: In the end, you’ve to locate and click on the ‘Safe Boot’ checkbox in the Boot options menu.

Now, if your Yahoo Mail SMTP settings work fine in the safe window mode, it indicates to you that the issue you’re encountering is neither related to the basic device drivers nor to the default settings of your respective device.

Solution 6: Antivirus or Firewall Software Blocking the Ports? Check If Any!

At times, programs such as Firewalls, Network Protocols, and Antivirus Software that you’ve installed –may block the ports from connecting to Yahoo servers and lead to ‘Yahoo outgoing SMTP server not working’ issue.

So, in such a case, what first you can do is disable your security programs on a temporary basis or adjust their settings to let Yahoo email and third-party email client work in harmony.

Secondly, you can check with your Internet Service Provider or even with your security software’s manufacturer to know everything about how to check and unblock 993, 995, 465 and 587 ports.

Solution 7: Check for Any Issues with Your Yahoo Mail Account

Lastly, as per this way out, you can check if Yahoo Mail is already facing any issues before pairing up with a third-party email program. To do so, use these steps—

  • Step 1: Sign in to your Yahoo Mail account from a web browser of your choice.
  • Step 2: Once you get access to your Yahoo account, use the ‘Compose’ option to compose a new email message.
  • Step 3: Then, in the ‘To’ field, enter your email address and click on the ‘Send’ button to simply send a Yahoo email to your own email address.
  • Step 4: Now, see if you receive the email within an approx. time of 5 minutes of sending it or not.

If not and there also you encounter the same delivery error then, you’ll need to then address the issue to fix it.

However, if the case is opposite, which means if your Yahoo account is working outside the email client app, and you have already tried out the above solutions to resolve the issue and nothing works in your favor then, the problem is with the application that you’re using to access your Yahoo Mail account.

In such a case scenario, it is suggested that you reach out to the app’s manufacturer to fix the problem or above all, you can simply consider using a different third-party email application to not encounter this error anymore.

So, to recapitulate, these are the different measures that you can try to fix the “Yahoo SMTP server not working” error in no real time.

Now, before we end this blog, it is also worth explaining that Yahoo users often confuse this error with ‘Yahoo Mail is not sending emails’ issue that though quite similar in nature, is way more complex. Well, because unlike the former; it occurs due to many different reasons like—

  • Internet Connectivity Issue: If your network connection is weak and not having enough signals, you cannot send or receive emails.
  • Corrupted or Outdated Mail App: Using the Yahoo Mail app on your phone that has gone outdated or corrupted is also one of the reasons why Yahoo email won’t send or receive.
  • Email Attachment Size: You even face problems in sending those emails that contain attachments of more than 25 MB size.
  • Emails going in Spam Folder: Sometimes you can be mistaken that your Yahoo Mail account is not sending emails as the expected email can also go into the spam folder of the recipient.
  • Blocked Sender: If the receiver whom you’re trying to send emails from your Yahoo account has mistakenly added you to the block list or has created some filters then also, your Yahoo emails won’t be sent successfully.
  • Wrong Email Address: If you’ve entered the incorrect Yahoo email address of the receiver then, your email will bounce back and leave you wondering why Yahoo is not sending emails.
  • Email Sending Limit: Mostly ignored, but this is one of the major factors why a Yahoo user faces trouble in sending emails that every email service has a particular sending limit which users cannot cross. So, maybe you have exceeded the daily email sending limit of Yahoo and thus, facing this issue.

Having read this, as you’re fully aware about the possible reasons behind your inability to send emails from your Yahoo account (now or in the future); you will require making some changes and do some troubleshooting as mentioned underneath—

  • Check your Internet Connection: Connect your device to a strong and stable internet connection to ensure a smooth process of sending and receiving Yahoo emails.
  • Update the Mail App: You can uninstall and reinstall the Yahoo Mail app from the App Store/ Google Play Store to make sure you’re using its latest version of Yahoo Mail app for sending emails.
  • Reduce the Size of Attachments: Avoid adding files and documents that are more than the size of 25 MB. Instead, make sure to either compose emails containing attachments below 25 MB size or to decrease the added file/document size.
  • Check the Spam Folder: You can ask the receiver to check its spam folder to find emails you’ve sent as sometimes due to an active filter, emails go to spam folders instead of going directly in the inbox.
  • Remove Sender from Blocked List: Ask the recipients to check their block list and if you’re mistakenly added there then, to remove you from the list then and there.
  • Verify Email Address: Before sending emails to recipients, you must re-check their email addresses for correcting any wrong email address that you’ve added mistakenly.
  • Check for Email Sending Limit: You must open your sent folder to have a count on how many emails you’ve already sent because if you have sent 500 emails from your Yahoo account then, you cannot send any further email as you exhausted the Yahoo email sending limit for the day.

[Note: These given solutions should be used particularly in case you’re facing the ‘Unable to send Yahoo emails’ issue.]

Bottom Line
